We recently conducted an independent security risk assessment for a medical facility in Durban, identifying weaknesses that traditional assessments often fail to detect. By approaching security from an independent perspective, we were able to recommend effective, practical measures to strengthen the protection of the premises.

If you would like to learn more about our assessments or have specific topics you’d like us to address, please email your suggestions to andre@alwinco.co.za. We will create and publish articles tailored to your interests on our website.

When the hunger monster turns into crime

Hunger is a critical security risk. With unemployment rising in South Africa, desperation fuels criminal activity. In a survey of 73 individuals, all admitted they would resort to theft to feed their families. Each unemployed person supports five others, deepening the crisis. Crime is becoming more structured, with large-scale theft increasing. Some businesses and homeowners contribute to the problem by purchasing stolen goods, while corruption further weakens security. As frustration grows, tensions between the wealthy and the struggling could escalate into conflict. Relying solely on law enforcement is insufficient. Independent security risk assessments help pinpoint vulnerabilities before criminals exploit them. While crime may never vanish, proactive security strategies can significantly reduce risks and safeguard valuable assets.

Farm Attacks and Murders in South Africa

Another farmer has been killed. Another family was left grieving. Another tragedy is soon to be forgotten by the headlines.

Farm attacks in South Africa are ruthless and premeditated, yet many farmers believe they are immune. They rely on fences, cameras, and armed response, assuming these measures are sufficient. However, criminals identify weaknesses long before their targets do. Security isn’t about chance,  it’s about taking action before disaster strikes. Despite the surge in farm murders, many farmers resist professional security guidance, trusting in their own experience.

However, reactive security measures like alarms and armed response only become effective after an attack has already taken place. Independent security risk assessments are essential in detecting vulnerabilities before criminals take advantage of them. A farm attack isn’t just a break-in—it’s often violent and targeted. Ignoring security risks makes a farm an easy target. Just as businesses require audits, farms must undergo independent security assessments to protect lives and livelihoods. Will farmers take action before a tragedy occurs, or will they wait until it’s too late?

The Hidden Dangers of Social Media

With nearly 70% of online information being false, social media is a breeding ground for hidden threats. Every post, image, and tag can reveal more than intended, often ending up in the wrong hands. AI and filters make deception effortless, allowing predators to manipulate victims, from children to unsuspecting adults. Privacy settings are essential, as even seemingly harmless posts can be exploited. Strangers posing as friends extract personal details, putting individuals at risk. Sharing locations, recognizable landmarks, or luxury possessions makes users easy targets for criminals. Additionally, an online presence can influence job prospects, and fraudulent job offers often lure people into dangerous situations. In today’s digital landscape, protecting personal information isn’t a choice—it’s a necessity.
